English midnight-explanations

I’ve been watching so many English videoblogs on youtube lately (yeah I do get addicted to things rather quickly..) and I read an English book at the moment, so I really feel like writing stuff in English right now. Well, Martin’s probably going to kill me for switching the language but well anyway.. at least I’m writing proper English, not the shortened stuff no foreigner understands.

I do feel like writing right now but I don’t really have anything to say, so I just gonna explain why I love the English language so much. First of all it’s because it feels so great in your mouth when you’re talking. Well it’s the same with a lot of other foreign languages for me (starting with my all-time favourite Italian), but English is somehow special. My just-popped-into-my-mind theory is that maybe the movements you do when you speak English are easier for your muscles than when you speak German… but well this definitely needs a bit of scientific research ;)

Second reason is that you’ve just got so many different expressions for rather similar things. The English language has a lot more words than German and I feel like you can express what you mean a lot easier. I don’t have a proper example right now (that’s why Martin doesn’t believe me) but believe me it’s true.

Thirdly you can be a lot more emotional talking in English. I don’t know if it’s because of the language or because of the attitude of the people but… oh yeah I’ve got an example for this one: Think of an English girl saying “oh my god” (well think of me saying that - but not all of you know how I talk..), it’s very expressive. Then think of the German “oh mein Gott”, you say that rather plain, without different intonations.. er I don’t know how to explain it properly :) Basically the sound of the language (wether you understand the words or not) is much more expressive and I do love to talk that way.

Yeah that’s basically why I’d prefer to talk in English all day :) Of course it’s also because it reminds me of the time I spend in England and of all the people I met there, but that’s just emotional stuff, nothing reasonable. Well you can see what I meant right now: It took nothing at all for me to write a whole lot of nothing in English (at half past one in the morning!) - which I think couldn’t have done in German…

No, i’m not going to kill you. But a multi-language site isn’t good for search engines. Well, do you want to switch? Therefore you have to translate your info site, the static dialoges and so on… We should speak about this topic on our next “meeting”, ok?

So würdest du auf jeden Fall in Übung bleiben (und ich auch). Praktisches Üben ist nämlich immer besser als nur lesen oder hören, oder nicht?

Hey, nice blog. Your english is fantastic! The thing I like about english is that words can be ambiguous. The same word can be used in several different contexts with several, often opposing, meanings. eg b0llocks!

Re: writing a blog in different languages - I think it can add value. Sometimes the depth and quality of the content are more important than SEO.

Russell, thank u so much! :)

You’re right about the ambiguous thing, although I think that makes it difficult sometimes. Like when you say “that’s quite important” - it can mean ‘very much’ or ‘well yeah but not really’.. it’s confusing :)

I for once also tried to maintain my blog in english, mainly because of the possibility to reach a broader audience, but there are also expressions which I think describe situations or things very well, for which I don’t have any similar expression in german.

But I had to realize that it’s much more difficult. German’s my native language and more than once, you can’t find the words in english to describe something in a way that satisfies you. That happens mostly on articles which should express some feelings you have about something, neutral explanations are rather easy to write.

But hey, maybe that’s just me and I’m too stupid for english. Reading’s no problems at all for me, so if you really want to continue with a foreign language, go on! :-)

Hehe I didn’t know u read my blog.. now I feel kind of honoured :)

I agree with u, there are some words in English which just don’t have a proper translation in German.. like ‘weird’ (my favourite :) ) for example.

Wenn sich in einem derart winzigen Blog derart viele möchtegern Insulaner tummeln dann kann es sich dabei wohl nur um eine bedrohte Randgruppe handeln welche versucht neue Reservate zu erschließen… ;)

(Oder eine anschwellende Masse welche in jede Ritze fließt)

But this is really a tasty burger, i mean your english is very good… or something BÖ
